Said goodbye to our fellow travelers the night before and slept in this morning. Decided NOT to go thru Canada to get to Glacier National Park so headed back to the USA!
We drove to Burlington, WA. Stopped at the Skagit Casino and had brunch. We may also have played a little poker!
Gassed up and headed 20 east along The Cascade Hwy. We will drive this for awhile thru beautiful mountains, rivers, gorges and streams. This was a route developed for those gold hunters! Not passable in winter. Here are a few scenic highlights!
Since we started late and took our time we thought we'd end our day in Winthrop at about 6:00 pm. Joe drove the whole time cause I think he was secretly not wanting me to drive the curvy mountain roads. Ok by me! I sat back and took it a all in.
We were a bit worried about accommodations for the night as cell service sketchy and the places I tried had no vacancy. If no room in Winthrop we'd head to Twisp....love they name.
Winthrop was a jewel of a town. The town founder was an author and had a friend visit who wrote The Virginian based on this town. Later the town council decided to keep to the western theme and all facades had to fit the plan. It is so very cute with all the comforts, coffee shops, spas and boutique hotels at reasonable prices.
We ate at The Old Schoolhouse Brewery and bought some of their award winning beer for my son-in-law.
We ordered fish and chips with this creamy homemade tartar sauce with lots of dill. Bet my friend Cheryl can duplicate it!
Found a cute place to stay at The Rivers Edge Resort.
Comfy. Slept listening to the gurgling creek and woke to the birds chirping. We felt like captives in a Disney movie!
Got to talk to Allison, EB and Lemon on FaceTime this morning. So nice!
Packed up and heading out to see more of the Cascades!
